Sennheiser HD800S Unveiled!

Really excited to see people impressions on the HD800S. Currently debating on picking up stock HD800s $900 and modding them or holding out for these puppies. Should be quite interesting to see!

cables are one of the higher margin items out there, kind of like an 8 dollar baked potato with a steak dinner...a 350 dollar retail cable costs sennheiser a fraction of that.....I am in the market potentially for the new HD800s but already own balanced cables from my HD800 so i would have no need for the cable

Except for many it's not a 8 dollar potato to a 50 dollar steak.  It's a (aftermarket) 500 dollar cable for a 1000 dollar headphone (or even more).

I would prefer to get an extra headphone instead of a cable... For instance HD800S + Momentum 2 or HD800S + HD650... Would be a nice bundle.

Nicely said, an I can promise you the food cost percentage MARK up on that potato is a lot steeper than what you'll see on that cable ;3

still even Beyerdynamic did it, sold their new headphone with a balanced cable for around 1/10 of the headphone it self, build aside I would see this more as a convenience, instead of buying the headphone then spending maybe $175 having a cable built [waiting] just but the cable from them an be good to go right out the box

the graph looks like the newer HD800 productions without the peak. So whoever got a HD800 without the peak imo should keep them cuz they are good drivers.  The ones with a peak will however transfer to HD800S and have that peak reduced. And compensate them with a balanced cable :p

I think I got such a HD800. I heard someone else his HD800 and the treble was not as nice as mine.

I'm still interested in the HD800S though.

Yes, that's why farmers are always in debt, because potatos are marked up too much. They should lower the markup to audiophile cable markup! That's how a potato will cost only 5$ a piece.

Nice... More sub-bass, no treble peak. This will be good.

The peak is still there but it's smaller. The Sennheiser graphs are awful so I'd wait until Innerfidelity or others get to measure a pair. I still think they're going to need some EQ and the frequency response is not going to be the same as the HD 600. People really need to keep their expectations under control.  It's a minor tweak at a slightly higher price when you can get a HD 800 used at a very good price now.

What's in the box?

  1. HD 800 S
  2. Cable with 6.3mm jack connector
  3. Balanced cable with XLR4 connector
  4. Microfibre cleaning cloth
  5. Manual
  6. USB flash drive

I won't be suprised if the differences are very minor and hard to tell them apart unless you are really looking for differences based on this graph.

There are people that have trouble hearing much differences between the HD600 and HD650 which are more different from eachother than the HD800 and HD800S based on this graph.

I can tell easily the difference between the 600 and 650, 600 is neutral and 650 warm. with what we can gather 800S will be quite the same but maybe a tad less, hence the S instead of 850

How does the Sennheiser balanced cable compared to other aftermarket cables like Draug 2? Is the same material being used in the balanced cables that's used in the regular stock 1/4" cable that comes with HD800? Also, how long is the Sennheiser balanced cable? couldn't find the info on their site.

The balanced cable is the same than the SE one except the connector : Jack vs XLR.

This HD800 peaks near the 800s range.

Hmm, I think it doesn't worth it. Very minor changes, off course who is planning to buy HD800 with balanced cable, HD800S is good choice, but depends on price. Anyway, was pricing already announced?
