In the market for a new set of cans to possibly replace my Grado SR125s.

Will be going into a iDSD Micro DAC.

Would either the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x  or the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO's be considered a step 'up' or 'down' from the Grado?

I love the sound of the Grado's, but find them very uncomfortable, especially the rediculous cord.

I'm guessing the SR125s make you feel like your sitting in the front row of a rock concert?
What kind of change in sound are you looking for?
Budget?

Try the link yourself. Not really accurate per se, but it really gives you a sense of how they sound.
I found the Sennheisers in that video to sound really like I remember them.
The M40Xs have a very similar tonal balance as the M50Xs, so you can safely compare these with the Sennheisers

Here's another link, where the M50X and M40X are heard side by side
