Schiit Modi USB DAC

I did exactly the same thing myself.
The difference is huge.

Indeed, the Asus is far superior even on just the DAC section !, but the biggest difference is that the Schiit is 0.5V quieter, how did you do the comparison ?

Output Signal-to-Noise Ratio (A-Weighted) (Front-out) : 124 dB
Output THD+N at 1kHz (Front-out) : >0.0003 %(-110 dB)

Output IMD 0.0003%  (-110db)
Output Full-Scale Voltage : Line output (RCA, 3.5) : 2 Vrms (5.65 Vp-p)

S/N: >100dB, referenced to 1.5VRMS, unweighted
Maximum Output: 1.5V RMS
THD: <0.003%, (-90db) 20Hz-20KHz, at max output
IMD: <0.004%, (-87db) CCIR

I find the Modi makes my work computer freeze up though. I have to unplug the USB, and hard shut-down the pc.

I experienced the same issue on Windows 8.1 (Soundcloud, Youtube, Winamp). Try switching the USB ports around and the USB cable if possible (I was using a printer USB cable, but it shouldn't matter as long as it's USB 2.0 rated). Has nothing to do with the restricted LAN (source: IT guy).

I just got a Vali/Modi yesterday and I noticed after I shutdown my computer that the USB still powers the Modi and the LED stays on. Does anyone know how to turn the Modi off when the computer is shutdown? I don't feel like unplugging it every night, or covering the LED with tape. Flipping the PSU switch isn't really an option either as my CMOS battery has been dead for sometime, and if my mobo loses all power I have to reset my BIOS settings every reboot.

It is hard to say without knowing what you have, but look under the power menu maybe. Probably something about power saving. I know it is a setting on my motherboard, but I have a completely different BIOS that you.

Not sure if I'm asking this in the right section but,

Would it be possible to combine a Fiio E12 and the Modi? I was just gifted an E12, and I ordered a Modi last week. I originally planned to order a Magni (or Vali) to accompany the Modi, but I would be willing to hold off if the E12 could serve as my amp in the meantime. Sorry if this is a "noob" question, I don't have much experience setting up audio equipment.

Yes, you need a mini to RCA cable like this.

I have been using my Modi/Magni combo through my MacBook Pro for the past month and they have been running flawlessly. Earlier today I received my new 2013 iMac, and immediately hooked the Modi/Magni to it, and the following issue occurs when it's plugged into the the iMac's USB port:

Any idea on what could be causing this? When the Schiit disappears from the output menu, the sound cuts out as well. It keeps going on/off/on/off/on/off.
