Headphoneus Supremus
The best sounding phono pre I ever owned (back when I still considered dragging rocks across plastic a good way to reproduce music) was a pure magnetic pre made by Rupert Neve (he of mixing board fame.) It was about 12 pounds of transformers and an analog RIAA EQ circuit. And yes it created large fields and interferred with everything - you had to keep it at least a foot from any other component.
