So dear friends, your love has gone
Only tears to dwell upon
I dare not say as the wind must blow
So a love is lost, a love is won

Go to sleep and dream again
Soon your hopes will rise and then
From all this gloom life can start anew
And there'll be no crying soon.

Guns N' Roses - Estranged

When you're talkin to yourself
And nobody's home
You can fool yourself
You came in this world alone
(Alone)

So nobody ever told you baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to you baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see
ONE, TWO

Old at heart but I'm only 28
And I'm much too young
To let love break my heart
Young at heart but it's getting much too late
To find ourselves so far apart

I don't know how you're s'posed to find me lately
An what more could you ask from me
How could you say that I never needed you
When you took everything
Said you took everything from me

Young at heart an it gets so hard to wait
When no one I know can seem to help me now
Old at heart but I musn't hesitate
If I'm to find my own way out

Still talkin' to myself
And nobody's home
(Alone)

So nobody ever told us baby
How it was gonna be
So what'll happen to us baby
Guess we'll have to wait and see

When I find out all the reasons
Maybe I'll find another way
Find another day
With all the changing seasons of my life
Maybe I'll get it right next time
An now that you've been broken down
Got your head out of the clouds
You're back down on the ground
And you don't talk so loud
An you don't walk so proud
Any more, and what for

Well I jumped into the river
Too many times to make it home
I'm out here on my own, an drifting all alone
If it doesn't show give it time
To read between the lines
'Cause I see the storm getting closer
And the waves they get so high
Seems everything we've ever known's here
Why must it drift away and die

I'll never find anyone to replace you
Guess I'll have to make it thru, this time - Oh this time
Without you

I knew the storm was getting closer
And all my friends said I was high
But everything we've ever known's here
I never wanted it to die

I think we need another My Dying Bride song here :

The Isis Script

You know they lied.
To us, they lied.
Remember them?
The final words.
All these years.
All these fears.
Remember them?
Ancient words.

We'll take it from you, when we like.
You will suffer for nothing, in your own home.

Will you help me fight them off?
They are killing me.
Help me with my broken heart.
The endless dark.
Will you keep them far from me?
Oh, the misery.
I need a friend to lay upon.
To be my sun.
Oh, lord help me with my pain.
I'm dead again.

Beliefs have taken me to my end.
Beliefs have taken me down again.
The words I have followed, took me down again.
The lies that I have read over again.
Leaves are falling words from the earth.
Spoken in silence. Never heard.

Closer, Joy Division --the whole album's tortured, haunting, & down right prophetic--
shortly after, lead singer/lyricist took his own life.... (I forgot his
name, but afterwards group reformed as New Order)

A couple more, but most of these need to be heard to receive the full effect:

"Crystal" by Curve (read the lyrics here)

"Lights in the Night" by Flash and the Pan (lyrics)

"Goodbye" and "Waking Up Beside You" by Stabbing Westward

The finale of 2112 by Rush always hits me as pretty depressed/depressing.

I was going to post this song, but mcbiff beat me to it. Long live GnR. One of my favorites, too.

Kate Wolf- Agent Orange (words and music by Muriel Hogan)

I was seventeen when I quit school,
the year that I enlisted
I can't recall just why I did,
my mom says I insisted.
I had some strange idea then
that Uncle Sam was right.
Momma cried, she signed the card
and I went off to fight.

(CHORUS)
But I got the news this morning,
the doctor told me so
They killed me in Vietnam
and I didn't even know

Got off the plane in Vietnam,
it didn't look like war
With all I saw I started wonderin'
what we came there for.
Some officers got drunk at night
and cheated on their wives
While those peasants on the other side
were fighting for their lives.

(CHORUS)

You know, the army tried some fancy stuff
to bring them to their knees
Like Agent Orange defoliants
to clear the brush and trees;
We'd fly all day above the trails
through clouds of poison spray
But they never said that chemical
would hurt my health today.

(CHORUS)

I tried hard to forget that war,
like everybody else did
I settled down, got married
and even had some kids
Our children both had birth defects,
the doctors had their doubts.
They never said what caused it
but I think I just found out.

(CHORUS)

The doctor said I had some time
he was trying to be kind
You know, I've never been a radical
but this has changed my mind.
I'd be so proud to hear my son say
Hell no, we won't go
Because you killed our dad in Vietnam
and he didn't even know.

This Agent Orange from Vietnam
we carry with us still
It stays inside for years and years
it does its best to kill
You might get cancer of the liver,
you might get cancer of the skin,
You might get a VA disability
you might not live to win.

(CHORUS)

Got to agree with this - awesome stuff. It's worth noting that some of his output is the most life-affirming you could hear. I had "Northern Sky" played as the first song at my wedding. At least 10 guests went out the next day and bought "Bryter Layter".

As far as sad music goes, Tindersticks are good at this, but I;d have to put Red House Painters up there. 2 tracks in particular:

"Drop":

so much that i can't say to you
my voice shakes from the hurt that i hide
ashamed of my existence
and of my petty often wounded pride
i'd like to come home to see you
and to catch your sickness by the bedside
but then you'd know how much i really need you

all the love in an instant
makes my life stop
but then my hate for you
makes my feelings altogether drop

if only i were blind to your selfish fling
and your desperate cause
and didn't press you for the details
that threaten my physical flaws

i'd like to come home to see you
and embrace your illness under soft light
but then you'd know how much i really need you

all the love in an instant
makes my life stop
but then my hate for you
makes my feelings altogether drop

so much that i can say to you
with affection that i burn inside
you're aching from the distance
avoiding strain that's running still alive
if only i could heal you in the sprinkling of the ocean side
but then you'd know how much i really love you

all the love in an instant
makes my life stop
but then my hate for you
makes my feelings altogether drop

--------

"Songs for a Blue Guitar:

when everything we felt failed
and some music soft in distant sails
but it don't sound like it did before
then i know i'm left with nothing more
than my own soul
when pretty pictues face back
but your coats aren't hanging on the rack
and blue water turns to
a place that i can't get to
a place that i can't
in a room all i feel
is the cold that you left
through the air all i see
is your face full of blame
what's left to see
what's there to see

in the room all i feel
is the cold that you left
through the air all i see
is your face full of blame
what's left to see
what's there to see
what's left to see

*sigh*

"Northern Sky" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The first time I heard it I was simply blown away.

Me too, I just have to make a third vote for that. I would say Northern Sky, Harvest Breed and From the Morning are my three favorite Nick Drake songs. It is such a shame that he passed away so young. Imagine what he would have been able to do if he stuck around a bit longer...

I'll add "Time Has Told Me" as well

Same as Jeff Buckley - what might he have done given time to grow and mature even further....
