It's curious since the K 340 are notorious for having a dirty sound if you will. The decay is slow in other words and I found them the least clear of the AKGs I've heard - sounding rather lush in comparison to the usual monitor-like AKG sound that emanates from its contemporaries.

I think the K340 is the best sounding akg I've heard. It's got nice details, decent soundstage, and
Pretty lush mids. it's got some nice treble sparkle too

Currently have:
k140 (600ohm)  - Father of AKG, mids are powerful, highs clear but don't sparkle, but bass is not precise when not properly amped
Q460 (I forget the ohm) - Somewhat flat but amazing bass response

K280 Parabolic (75 ohm) - on ordered but super psyched for the dual drivers

I didn't like the K280 much. Whenever I put them on my head the sound just didn't make any sense.... until I put on some classical.

I've owned two K340's, I think one each of the bass light and bass normal. They are certainly strange headphones, and I always got the feeling I wasn't powering them enough (this was earlier in my head-fi career, before I jumped off the deep end).

For most genres they were average, but they were great for Metallica.

Yeah they are just so weird... anyway I'm trying to decide between the k142 and the k172. The k142 look better IMO, but the k172 supposedly have better bass, and I need bass. Any suggestions?

k142 has more bass. don't know which has better bass, they share the same drivers anyways. What I do know is: save a bit more bucks and get a k242 or k240s, if possible don't dive deeper into this hobby. any bucks you'll spend from here will only increment the sound a little.
