K501 here (with a silver UP-OCC recable): Still going strong after 5+ years (over which time, I've seen about a dozen other sets of cans come and go).  Still my midrange reference cans!

: )

There's a very good reason the K501 set me off on that downward spiral of AKG ownership.

But I've been holding steady for a while now with the K240 Sextett, K401, and modified K1000.

Modified K1000?

i used the k240 for many years in the control room. now i use the k701 mostly. you can say what you want about listening to music on them.....i make the music with them!

that's interesting. what older k240 models? i have the sextetts lp and k240DF, both wired with 18awg wire(240DF with silver/ copper, and sextetts lp just copper) and terminated with a 4-pin XLR running them off speaker outputs and never liked the k701 compared to them. i have the k601 also. while i find the k601 better than the k701, i still like my sextetts lp and 240DF over them by good margin. more transparent, detailed, clarity, and clean sounding to me personally.

I guess I'm joining Team AKG.  I've got a pair of K601s coming in tomorrow.  I needed something with a more "reference" frequency response to help me tune my T50RPs.

Modified K1000?

I was doing some experimentation with the filter board a while back, but don't really remember where I left off. I also removed the foam discs because they were starting to deteriorate, and after making some replacement ones from a virtually identical foam I don't notice a huge difference with them out. Bass response seems a little higher without them, but I can't really tell if there's other drawbacks to removing it, it's hard to tell since I can't A/B it. I need to get them over to Tyll for some proper measurements sometime, just never gotten around to it.

I actually sliced off the two center bumps on the headband... couldn't live with them.
