The zmf is a lot more to my liking. It has fuller mids, better instrument separation, similar bass presentation, better detail but what I like about the zmf over the k550 is how smooth and organic it is. I want to hear it again and will soon but from memory it is a very natural sounding headphone. the k550 in comparison sounds artificial but still decent and less full.

Zach, I've been hearing  lot of great things about these cans lately and I noticed that you use the HM5 pads. Where do you get these from? I ordered a pair from mp4nation that took forever to show up... also, how do you adhere them to the cups? I originally bought them for a different pair of headphones but I want to try them on my modded T50RP's for fun. They seem too small to wrap around the lip.

  Zach, I've been hearing  lot of great things about these cans lately and I noticed that you use the HM5 pads. Where do you get these from? I originally bought them for a different pair of headphones but I want to try them on my modded T50RP's for fun. They seem too small to wrap around the lip.

I just buy the HM5 pads in bulk from MP4Nation and have them ship them to me using Fed-Ex.  It's like $17 bucks or something and they get to me in Chicago from Hong Kong in a day or two, faster than a lot of domestic shipping!  $17 would be steep if I were ordering a pair, but isn't so bad when I order 40 or so pairs as it makes up a small amount of the cost.
 
You can stretch them to make them fit around the lip but there's a few negatives to that:
 
1.  If you paint your set you could damage the finish, especially if it's not cured because it's harder to get them on.
 
2.  You could rip the pads.
 
3.  It brings the ears closer to the driver than gluing them on with a little glue gun glue, which I don't like because sometimes my ears touch the baffle.  I like the glue gun because it's easy on/off, it cleans up easy, and it maintains the shape of the pad more.  You also can "stuff" the pads to give you even more space if you'd like.

Hey, thanks for the reply. So you just glue the flap to the plastic around the felt on the earside? Or do you rip the flap off first? Hot glue does seem like a good bet, though it will be hard to make changes unless the flaps can withstand quite a few glue/unglue cycles.

I leave the flap on though I suppose you could take it off.  Just go easy on the hot glue and if you know you're going to be taking it on and off use little "dots" in just a few places as it won't affect the sound quality negatively and won't put too much glue on the pads.  If you do go all the way around it'll peel off easily if you don't use too much.  Glad I could help!

How do these compare to K550?

I used to have the k550 now I have the ZMF v1. I find the ZMF to be fuller and warmer but not overly so. The k550 is just a little bass light. Basically, it has AKG's house sound imo. The ZMF has similar bass to the k550 in terms of extension and texture except that the ZMF is noticeably fuller. The mid-range is smoother on the ZMF and has greater realism/timbre. The treble on the ZMF is much smoother than on k550 and to my ears has better extension. I found the k550 has a weird spike in the lower treble and then rolls off.

Also the ZMF is noticeably harder to drive than the k550. The ZMF is the first headphone I had where I felt it actually benefited from an amp. The k550 can be easily driven with just about anything.

I am searching but i cant seem to find much specific info about amping t50rps as I am able to find about other sets. Lets say I was upgrading from an average cmoy and am ready to spend $200 possibly more on a good desk amp. I have an odac. What might be some recommendations. Should I go tube or no? I'm upgrading my rig piece by piece as i go along. I want to try to take as big a leap as i can within my budget. You guys know how that goes. So right now it's the amp. I'm looking at Little Dot mk2 (maybe mk3), A used lyr maybe, asgard 2, matrix m stage, 
 
Or is something cheaper all i really need with these like magni, 02, vali  
 
Somebody please rattle off some amps i could use with these and expect nice results coming from an ageing cmoy that was average in it's day. I'm ready to spend 2-300 dollars. 
 
Is there some old tried and true gem perhaps in the for sales here that i should have a look at?

As I stated before in this thread: any amp that drives the MrSpeakers Mad Dog well, will do on the ZMF and other modded T50RP.

A powerful amp like a vintage receiver/integrated amp seems to give the best results.
I have a powerful hybrid tube amp that does the trick.
The Vali you mentioned seems to be very good.
 
Cmoy or full tube amp (OTL) are not good enough.

Personally I believe you get 95-99% of your T50RP out of the Magni or Vali. No need to go bigger.

Thank you and duely noted. But im thinking on the other hand he offers that xlr recable for a reason. And that I should at least go bigger than entry level while im feelin froggy.
