I'm coming from a Yulong U100. I own the V200 since a month. For this time I used the Yulong U100 as a DAC only for PC Playback. The build quality and feel of the V200 was a clear step up from the Yulong. Sound wise I heard no difference to the Yulong U100. Today, as the V800 stepped in, I experience a more holographic soundstage and an all in all rounder, more realistic sound. Just a first impression.

Oh yes, that's the V800.
I had the same impression when I rigged up my V800 for the first time.

Can anyone recommend some nice and short XLR cables for a V8/V2 stack? I don't need francium triple braided strands with ambrosia cores - just something short and unobtrusive that doesn't stick 1/2 metre out the back of the stack.

Id imagine that the PYST cables that Schiit sells would work for a V200/800 stack as well as they work for the Gugnir/Mjolnir stack

That, sir, is an excellent idea. I hadn't thought of those - I even ordered a pair of them before X-mas with the modi-magni combo (which I ultimately cancelled the order on).

I finally ordered the V200 and V800 stack from Thomann this weekend.  With a bit of luck they'll arrive around the end of the week.
 
Thomann sell some quite short XLR cables, this one is only 0.3m:

I'm a big fan of really short cables like that, for use with the V200/V800 stack or similar amp/DAC combo stacks. The downside is that obviously they can't be used in other ways should the need arise.

Thanks a lot for your conclusion, this is very helpful as I'm looking at both DACs right now, and your opinion makes the scale tip in favor of the V800 (it's easier to get in germany, too!).
But keep us updated, maybe you'll change your opinion
Just one question: How picky is the V800 with the source? The Gungnir is supposed to, and I quote, "decrapify" even bad sources when the VCXOs won't lock. What about the V800 in that case?

My humble take on it - the V800 is one of the more forgiving DACs as far as high end DACs go. The SRC4392 that it uses is one of the best digital receivers currently available, and goes a long way towards eliminating jitter from the start. And that's not even counting the ASRC function which is its main job description. 
 
I've fed my V800 with everything from a basic $200 CD player to a multi-thousand dollar CD player and all sounds very close. You don't lose much by using just an "average" transport.

My Violectric V200 and V800 arrived today, and are now sitting impatiently in a box next to me waiting for me to go home from work and play with them.  I have to say that ordering from Thomann.de was a pleasure.  They kept me informed every step of the way and after processing my order yesterday (I placed it over the weekend) it arrived by UPS courier today.  A flawless experience so far.
