Yes they can be replaced. You need to turn the chrome grille counter clockwise about 10 degrees. I used several toothpicks, stuck in the grille holes for this, so as not to damage the plastic.
Once they are off you need a small phillips screwdriver to remove the two silver screws. Once removed, press really firmly on the sides of the white plastic part to disengage the two plastic tabs. Press hard and pull up. It's tough to get this part off but it does come off.
Once that's done take a large phillips screwdriver and remove the black screw. You have to be very careful from now on since the wires are very thin and you can break the solders easily.
With the band assembly separate, unhook the elastic from behind. Now move to the upper part of the elastic. You have to pry a button off from the underside and then you can get the other end of the elastic.

Actually if properly used/stored they last for a very long time (10 years plus). Plus the AKG system is very easy to adjust to various user's head sizes/shapes.
