<Renewed at 2012/03/12>The new HiFiMAN 802 & New UI named "Tai-Chi"

I am just curious about the pricing of the HM802.

Although it is too early to tell, HM801 previously retails at USD799.

It is difficult to price the HM802 with HM801 still in store - higher than 801 (USD799) and DX100 may dominate the market, lower than 801 and the 802 will effectively kill 801's sales.

Hifiman has since removed the HM801 from their product line-up. Also, Head-direct had removed it from their website so you can no longer purchased it from them.

Since the main rival of the upcoming 802 will be the DX100, I am going to expect some competitive pricing. DX100, for all its specs, is really hard to beat at USD829.

That is why I'm not even gonna worry about this new DAP. Not to mention is Hifiman gonna include the game amp standard or another solution to make this DAP "portable" with sensitive IEMs or Headphones?

The DX100 is supposed to be pretty neutral. The 801 is heavily coloured, so if the 802 is using the same chip and follows what has come before then it'll be the same. Depends what sort of sound floats your boat more.

It's a good thing that they take 801 off the market. hifiman has a lot more fan base. So I won't be surprised that they do successfully with 802 again.

I don't agree that the HM-801 is heavily coloured, but we agree that these things certainly are a matter of preference. To me the HM-60x sounds somewhat coloured (rounded down treble). The PCM1704UK is by reviewers described as "the master of neutrality", so this is also interesting in terms of what we are talking about here.

However, in I my experience the HM-801 could very well be described as musical and analog sounding, but far from what I consider coloured. When comparing it to both my cdp and dac (see signature and profile) it sounds quite close to both (apart from a slight bass boost). If you on the other hand compare it to sources that are analytical sounding, then the HM-801 (and my other sources) may sound warm or whatever - but that would be in comparison only in my book - and maybe it will say at least as much about the units one compares it to.

I am not a fan of touchscreen either but so far, the only non-touch UI that works well with huge libraries is the iPod Classic UI.

The others are just a chore.
