You have to try Yimou Zhang's films. Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, etc. They are among my favourite wuxia films.

Some good ones that I have seen:

Persepolis
Run Lola Run
Seven Samurai and all of Kurosawa's movies

You can also dive into some great anime if you want, there are some anime movies that are heads above any live action. Metropolis is a great movie, besides the list of Akira, Miyazaki, etc that are usually named.

I guess you already know that Oldboy is considered to be a part of a trilogy.

But anyways, it goes like this: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance — Oldboy — Lady Vengeance

How about super classics?

8 1/2 (Fellini) (Italy)
Metropolis (Lang) (Germany)
The Seventh Seal (Bergmann) (Sweden)

Just to mention a few.

EDIT: Oh.. I just noticed that you were not looking for mainstream movies... above movies ARE mainstream films but if you haven't watched any of it, I highly recommend. Also, Gwoemul is kind of horror I guess...

Thanks for those, that's more along the lines of what I was looking for. I've seen 3 of those, didn't like The Host that much, other 2 were good.

Yeah basically and with a focus on Chinese/Mandorin/Korean/Japanese spoken language/made from movies, although I don't mind getting into older foreign classics such as the ones listed in blessingx's post once in a while. Haven't seen Run Lola Run, getting it.

If you are in the mood for humor I'd suggest a whole flock of Korean films:

My Sassy Girl (the film that started it all, this movie is basically mandatory for anyone watching Asian movies)
My Wife is a Gangster
Attack the Gas Station (crazy but amazingly funny movie)
Volcano High
Sex is Zero

Man I haven't seen these in YEARS.. brings back some memories.

I've seen all of those, felt they were followup movies to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon once the door was opened/market solidified in North America by it, but not being nearly as good as it or Fearless (2006) for example. Very pretty scenery and sets though in all of them, decent to good watches overall.
