Good choices, I think. A couple of suggestions:

1. You won't find a WRX within your budget. They're just too new (oldest model is something like a 2003), it won't happen.

WRX's go back to 97 in Australia, and can be had for about $19k aus or less.

WRX's go back further than that in the motherland (Japan, in this case)... however, in the US (where the OP is from), we were burdened with the wait til 01 to get our Rex's...

I'm still thinkin' the 2.5RS... I'd stay away from the camaros and whatnot... RWD + snow... not the most fun in the world. (well, not for the faint of heart/unexperienced, at least). Personally... I dig RWD... oh yeah... you can look for an e30 325ix! It's a small coupe or sedan, and its AWD, and its a bimmer. Watch out for rust, though... you can have that WELL within your budget (probably 4k for a decent one... check http://www.bimmerforums.com to see if anyone has one for sale). That leaves you 3k for mods/maintenance (depending on the tires, I'd get some good summer tires on new wheels or the stock wheels, and get some Blizzak's for winter tires (either stock wheels (my preference), or get some steel wheels... the tire rack ( http://www.tirerack.com ) would be a good starting place for ya.

Well, I am picking up my new car on Saturday - wohooo!!

It is a ..... drum rolls....

Mitsubishi 3000GT...
 1. 96 model
 1. 119k miles
 1. Its 120k maintenance was done last summer (including timing belt and water pump)
 1. Radiator and alternator are in perfect shape
 1. The brakes were all replaced including pads and rotors, last summer
 1. It has flywheel and racing clutch on it - which grips fine
 1. He had the front wheel bearings replaced and the rears are fine
 1. Tires bought new less than a year ago
 1. There's no rust on the chassis, very little rust under the rear hatch.
 1. Transmission is 2 years old (3000gt's are notorious for their sync issues)
 1. And, he has ALL the maintenance records since 96 (i will be the 3rd owner)

You can see the pics in above link (black 3000gt)...

Excited like a kid!!!

THANKS A LOT for all your suggestions. I think this is a good price/performance/aesthetics combo for me!

I negotiated the price from $5.5k to $4.6k, which is a good/fair deal IMO.

That's one purdy car! Congrats!
Is that the model that has AWD? They're a heavy car so it should be great in the snow! I have a friend that used to race one as a rally car.

AWD's are VR4 (300hp with 315 ft-lbf torque, but their weight is 3800 lbs), mine is the base model unfortunately

(220 hp with 205 ft-lbf but lighter - around 3200 lbs)...

edit: by the way 4-season tires suck big time in Maine's snow hehe!
