I'm thinking about taking a T amp I have laying around (Lepai or Topping) and wiring both channels into an old tower speaker. Should it work so that the speaker would play both channels correctly without causing damage/fire?
 
If so, I'd like to put this combo somewhere in the house for background sound like podcasts and NPR, etc. Please, educate an ignorant man!?

I don't think those things can be bridged. If your speakers have two sets of binding posts, you can use a Y-RCA cable to split the incoming signal from the source, then wire up the high pass and low pass to one each channel in the amp. Take note that this may not necessarily produce the headroom you need, nor loudness; while at the same time if only the tweeter is on the high-pass there's a possibility that it may play louder. You could wire both tweeters to one unit and both low pass to the other amp, that way you can control how much less power the tweeters get. Either way you'd need a preamp to have a master volume control.
