I've been thinking alot about these phones before, seems to be a pair of very nice cans, sound wize, and looks. However one thing have puzzled me. The ATH W1000 have the shape of the W2002's and the W100's look, round. Are these the same cans with different ear cups or are they completely different because some refer to the ATH W100's as ATH W100/W1000

They are completely different headphones.

Mindless,

These reviews might be helpful:

One by Blighty who prefers the W1000 to the W100: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...7&page=1&pp=15

and one by elnero who prefers the W100 to the W1000: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...threadid=35263

Regrettably, I only know the W100 and no other W hadphones by Audio Technica (well, I have listened to an old W10VTG without any break-in once, must have been a decade ago), but in comparison to many other headphones, including the Sony R10, the W100's biggest strength is its forgiving and musically involving nature. If your tastes lean more to the musical and relaxed than to the analytical and detailed side of the spectrum, the W100 will be a good choice.

As I understand it the W100s are an older set of the wooden headphones from Audio-Technica which some members have stated as having a very good sound which is different from the W1000 and W2000's sound.

The W2000s were, I believe, released about two years ago and incorporated the "Audio-Technica's D.A.D.S. (Double Air Danping System) for transparent and accurate bass reproduction improvement" into a wooden headphone. I think this set was released as a limited edition and priced accordingly.

The W1000s are the latest wooden headphones from Audio-Technica and also incorporate D.A.D.S. and are moderately (?) priced. Some have stated that the W2000's sound is better than the W1000's. (I believe that Bangraman has tried them all and would probably know.)

My pair of W1000s arrived last week and I'm still breaking them in. They sound really nice to me. (Part of that is probably psychological since I like the idea of wooden cans and they also look so "cool.")

(There's a history of the wooden headphones from Audio-Technica printed on the box my headphones came in. I'll check it when I get home and repost if there's any additional helpful information.)

It's already been said, but all of the AT headphones are different from one another. AFAIK, there have not been any released that were simply rebadges/updates of the same headphone.

And my experience with the W1000 suggests that it is almost exactly opposite to the W100. It is very analytical and detailed. Though, it does seem to respond very well to system upgrades/changes. If your system is on the warm side, the W1000 might be your cup of tee.

another note is that i have found the w1000 to be very amp dependant, don't know anything about the w100s, never heard them. but having owned the w1000s for a couple of years, still haven't had the right amp for them, i know they don't like asl tube amps and if memory serves they don't like tubes at all although someone could correct me on that one. i'm waiting to get the cash for an xp7 from ray samuels, i heard this amp at the milwaukee meet and it was definitely a winner with the w1000s.

I'm not really sure about the amp dependency of the W1000. They're simply rather cold analytical phones, in the vein of the Etys. The W100 were more lush, while the W2002 kind of combine the technical with the warm.

I sorta disagree. My W1000s hooked to my MG Head OTL MkI sound sooo smooth in comparison to the CD3000s which made everything analytical. But, to each ear his own

Did you sell the CD3K then get the W1K?

Wasn't the L3000 introduced in 2003?

Maybe the next AT woodie is just around the corner seeing that we haven't even pass the half point mark of 2004...

i thought L3000 was in it's own little catagory... all the older/current ones are W series

if L3000's really the 2003 model, then it wouldn't be the wooden lineup anymore

The L3000 does have a wooden cup underneath the leather... Maybe the 2004 AT phone would be another Leather one? Maybe L4000 that cost even more and sounds even better? When was the green L3000 introduced?
