first off, im new here so this might be a stupid question.
 
would an amp still work for noise cancelling headphones, if the headphones can turn the nc off? i have the monster inspirations and am thinking about buying an amp for it.

no, its very unlikely the inbuilt amp is bypassed even when you turn NC off, so amping will not provide any benefit. its possible it even has an ADC in there, that samples the analogue input to digital before a digital noise cancelling stage, then dac->amp->headphone drivers; so even using a higher quality dac would be pointless.

so if they suck, they will continue to suck even if you feed them with a high end dac/amp
