I just came back from the National Arts Centre Gala in Ottawa. The first half was brilliant with Pinchas Zukerman and the National Arts Centre Orchestra doing Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. Then Sarah McLachlan took to the stage and unfortunately brought her band with her. She was great, however whoever was mixing totally drowned out the orchestra and all I could hear was her drummer and guitarist. Finally she did a half speed version of Sweet Surrender with just vocals and the orchestra and it was excellent.

In light of what I consider to be a lost opportunity, I'm wondering what are some excellent recordings that combine the best of pop, rock, alternative, punk - what have you - with the full bodied back up of a symphony orchestra?
