Apple need to get up off their backsides and relaunch the classic with a better dac & amp and a larger hard drive. Increase the price a bit and make it a specialist line. As far as i understand the touch's downsample 24/96 files to 24/44, so they're no good.

Unfortunately, they are way too vested in multi-funtional hardware and software development.  They just seem not to place a very high priority in developing audiophile equipment, though I'm in total agreement with you.

I think the main thing that keeps me from biting is the delivery time. 9 months is a lot of time to have other devices appear and to maybe regret buying it before you even have it. But I'll definitely keep an eye on it and perhaps buy it later, if it turns out to really be a great device. Even though it will cost 100usd more that way.

+1

Yes, it was tempting but I'm willing to wait until it is out, the Pono Music store is up and running, and see how the reviews, etc. pan out.

Do we Head-Fier's really enjoy this hobby in that small a bubble?

YES for sure, I bet Jude can give us more precise numbers....guessing portable audiophiles make up 1/10 of 1% of the population?
Neil Young and the musicians behind Pono are mainstream. Still, I am surprised how popular the whole project has become.  800K was the target and they are at 5 mill + with almost 15,000 supporters, and 16 days to go!. Immediate gratification is not part of this mix and yet so much support, Its amazing really.

When there is bitching about this project from any Headfier he/she being very short sighted. Our hobby is now going mainstream which means that we are going to be direct beneficiaries whether we buy anything Pono related or not.  And $300 for a DAP, how is that something to whine about? Same ballpark as iPods and the sound has got to be equal or better.  People like to get emotional, hell this is a emotional hobby to begin with......but instead of looking at what's wrong why not look at what's right?

My problem with it is that the campaign is seemingly making a huge push for HD audio, when in reality that isn't the answer and is almost like brainwashing consumers to go out and spend big $$$ on something that has no audible benefits to humans. I want the Pono player to be successful, but I don't really support the current advertising and reasoning behind the campaign.

I agree. We can all certainly hope for improved competition and corresponding pricing benefits.

It seems to me that you've just described a huge proportion of the discussion on this website and the equipment being presented here.  Look at all the new DAP's and DAC's, all pushing their 96 and 192/24, and now DSD capabilities.

Having the ability to play back 24/96+ is one thing, advertising that it's way better than CD quality is a different story. I'm fine with playing back 24/96+, I'm not fine with saying that HD audio is automagically better than CD quality and that everyone should be buying that kind of music. The Pono player is only one part of the campaign.

Lossless music vs MP3 128 is better. That's exactly my point, much more people will now know to rip their CDs or if downloading a digital album to use one of the lossless formats rather than lossy.

I honestly haven't seen 128 kbps MP3 in quite some time. When was the last time you saw someone distributing such files? Lossless vs high bitrate lossy files become pretty hard to distinguish between when doing tests. iTunes' music is a good example if you own both the iTunes version and the CD (they're hard to distinguish between), and many people already have music purchased from the iTunes Store.

it's not like this little player can't play any other formats so it's all good. i'm interested in the player but not Pono music store (or whatever they call it).

Fair point.  It is a fine nuance in listening, and frankly why I stick with Apple products and their dependable operating system.

I agree with Replicant.......and have to give Pono its deserved kudos. We DO NOT have to buy anything from their store to use the player.

For me personally, I do not think I will be using a Pono player. I've found the ultimate that is available at this point in time, the AK240. I back the Pono project for the underlined statement. Neil sent this email this morning.

Here we are at the halfway point. My experience here at Kickstarter has been life changing. After banging my head against the walls of venture capitalism for almost three years, dealing with business experts who didn’t understand what we were trying to accomplish; rescue the art of recorded sound and make great music available into the future, I found you people. You are the ones who understand what this is. You have proven it with your amazing support.
When we blew through our goal and actually doubled it on the first day, you changed my life. I will never forget that. This is just the beginning of a long road towards our goal of rescuing the music, all of it, from Cab Calloway to Sinatra, the Beatles and Rolling Stones, to Nirvana and Patti Smith, to Jay Z and Rihanna, and beyond. All of this music is the world’s history, the cultural creations of artists since the beginning of recorded sound. Now it can be preserved, if we do our job right, for future generations to hear and feel, not just recognize.
We are working now with Rap and R&B music sources as well as Country Music and Classical, in an effort to show you how great all music can and will sound with PONO.
Thanks for your help. We are very grateful for it. Obviously we can’t do this without you.

Good point.....I was actually thinking about ripping from CDs. I think the default setting in iTunes, if that is what someone would be using, for MP3  is 128.
