I'm wondering if the Pico or Predator SQ is better than a Darkvoice 336i ?

My source is Itunes/Alac with airport express and Besresford DAC. My headphone is MS2 and I don't plan to change except for an MS Pro.

Please give me your opinion

I don't think any portable can compete with a standalone home tube amp... just my opinion though. Although the closest you'll get is probably with the Pico and Predator

DV336i is like 1w of power.....no way any portable going to deliver that. Unless it had a battery the size on your head hahaa

This is kind of like asking which knife would save your life better in the forest: A swiss Army Knife, or a dedicated hunting knife?

Point is, sure, both can do "it." But the dedicated one will be far more superior because it was made especailly for what it is meant for.

Apples and oranges.

No portable is going to be able to overcome the limitations of battery power when compared to a line powered amp. If they could, desktop amps would cease to be made.

I like Darkvoice amps, but they don't do their best with low impedance phones. If you are staying exclusively with MS / Grado phones, there are better amp matches in the price range - mostly SS models. I have had a DV336 and currently have a DV332. I like them but they never get any play time with anything other than HD650's.

I hate the sennheiser headphone

I had an HD 555 and for a first headphone I enoyed it, but after tried high end AKG (K701/K340) and the MS2 I can't listen an sennheiser anymore. I tried an HD650 on the DV336i and I really don't like the sound

WOW, really didnt like the 336i and the 650? What tubes were you using?

The 336i does a fantastic job at pushing the 650s. You really do need the right tubes though, which can get expensive.

Lots of people heard my setup at can jam and they all were pretty much overly impressed at how well the 336i sounds with my 650s.

I have RCA NOS tube on it, even if for a lot of people the couple is great, I don't like the dark sound of sennheiser

Which tube in the back or front?

I used a RCA 6AS7G in the back and a Sylvania VT-231 with mine...if i wanted a tad less bass then the RCA was swapped out for a GE 6080....

Either one was a great combo, if you have 336i, you owe it to yourself to get those tubes. Hands down the best for that amp...minus the bendex if you can find them for cheap.

I have the 6AS7G in the back, and a unknown model of RCA in front

I have a couple of Sylvania but both together the sound is "very far", I don't like them.

Yes, the RCA 6SN7GTB is not the best tube, its not bad..kind of a weird soundstage. The mids seem really recessed.

The VT231 brings it alittle closer and brings the mids back into a more even presentation.

I had a GE 6SN7GTB that i really enjoyed with the 701s when i had them.

The Sylvania I have haven't a number written on his body, just the writing is yellow.

I'm trying the Sylvania in the front socket : that sounds great (can't tell difference with the front RCA, many days I didn't listen the DV). SO the conclusion is that the back Sylvania is a real crap :/

edit : the sylania is : Preamp tubes : Sylvania 6SN7 = VT231, 1950s
