…sigh…the last surviving member of the classic Bill Evans Trio has now left us. Motian went on to be one of the most individually incisive drummer/bandleader/composers in jazz…can be credited with discovering generations of junior musicians, including saxist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell…still lead a trio with them right up until his death…

…this is my favorite clip of him…shows the master at work…RIP…

Heard about this on NPR earlier. Another great is gone.

I'm thankful we have terrific recordings of him - I had to spin "Waltz for Debby" a few times today.

…turns out that Paul Motian's last live gig (in September) was also with the pianist Anat Fort…this video is of the final tune. She says he told her afterwards that he didn't know the arrangement. Can y'all tell?

Been appreciating a couple of his albums tonight, live in Bremen 77 and  more recently at the Village Vanguard. One brilliant drummer and percussionist,  The drums for me are soooo important in Jazz and he was more than the backbone, he made the music!  A sad loss.
