I use my gear for two maybe three hours a day. I have a collection of 24/96 recordings and well recorded CDs on a macbook pro as a source, (optical out). I enjoy all of my music, but recently I have preferred to listen to my CDs rather than the hirez stuff. They seem smother, more relaxed, gentler and clear to my ears than my SACD and DVDA albums. Am I drunk, have my ears gone of the deep end, did brain cells die when I wasn't looking? This is the only time I have ever thought my CDs sounded better than my hirez collection. Has anybody else experienced this? HELP MEEEEEEEE!

(I see nothing wrong with preference these past few days, just puzzled, thats all.)

Yes, I and others share your experience. The data may be 1s and 0s, but a lot of stuff happens during data extraction from your mac/CD to converting the digital data into analog sound that can affect the ultimate outcome of the digital-to-analog conversion. I'm no techie so I won't even try to explain the stuff. Suffice to say, you are not alone in your experience.

Definitely not alone! Recently my interest has changed to listening to my CD's almost exclusively. There's a certain warmth and personal type of interaction with the artist/music using a decent cdp and a simple disc that is hard to describe.

No, since a .cda doesn't actually contain PCM. That would be the shortest answer to this question I guess.

Maybe the soundstage being smaller and rounder has to do with it! Cant place my finger on it but right now its how I feel. Like I said, I have only felt this way for a few days. Maybe this will pass, but I almost hope not.
