So this is the problem. Foobar can't play ALAC because the only decoding that works is apparently buggy as hell, and I can't use FLAC or the other free lossless files because then I wouldn't be able to use the iTunes interface (it doesn't support FLAC). How in the world do I get around this without ditching iTunes?

I used the foobar with ALAC plugin for months with no problems. The decoder may be beta, but its not buggy.

Really? I was reading a forum post about the ALAC plugin crashing when it tried to play tagged ALAC files.. but then again that post was in early 2006 or late 2005

I use nothing but apple lossless with the plugin and works great with the current version. The old one with the old plugin was all sorts of buggy but worked enough for me. No problem with the new one, love this setup.

I am listening to ALAC's in Foobar right now with no problem. I would suggest using the foobar plugin for a while to determine if for some reason it will give you problems.
