OK here's the deal. My DAC seems to pick up a lot of power supply noise through the usb cable. When my laptop is running on battery - quiet. When the external supply is attached - snap, crackle and pop. This is not a huge problem but I am looking to optimize my current setup.

I am thinking of two tweaks or solutions: get a cheap usb to optical (TBAAM or M-Audio Transit) - this should eliminate power supply noise because of the nature of the optical signal. Is this correct?

The other idea was to get an external battery. But I am not sure if this would just repeat the same problem (substituting one external power supply for another).

Any thoughts?

Use a "cheater plug". This solved a similar problem that I once had.
