Sorry
I did not mean I thought the cd23 was a low cost stop gap!
on the contrary its a fine player and will do for a while yet,
I have not even optimized the set up yet!

just wondering, but do stax headphones have any sort of impact?

All I know is that electrostatic speakers are clear and wonderful sounding but lack the physical impact... wondering if it's the same with electrostatic headphones...

The only dynamic pair of phones you list are DT931...have you tried other dynamic headphones? How do they compare with your Stax's.

Thanks

I have not listened to many dynamic headphones, having listened
exclusively to stax for years.
This is now changing though with the purchase of the dt931s for
my portable.
These phones sound very different to the staxes, but its a mainly
nice difference, they have a notably different bass response
which initialy sounds greater giving a sense of impact , but I
belive it is a slightly unatural power emphasis into the upper bass
regions giving this effect,in the example of the 931s with my portable system it is an effect I enjoy on most occasions,as it rarely produces a boomy bass like so many others.
I as yet have no experience with the legendary Grado impact.

Stax bass goes deep and is tight and arrives where its recorded
and no where else, this coupled with the distinctive midrange and
liquid top produce dynamics that sometimes make me jump and
to me that is impact!
I personally do not want enough energy rammed into my ears to
make my whole body vibrate thats the job of loudspeakers.

These phones contrary to some oppinions are not just for classical
I listen to everthing from japanese chamber music to scary german drum and bass. [panacea turns teeth gritting brightness into an art form]

You may detect I am a little biased , I am,just can,t get enough
of that open clarity

I do look forward to the grado experience though.

I am always really interested in this type of comparison especially because I kind of want to guess wheter or not I myself would really like Staxes.

If you think the DT931 gives you a sense of bass impact compared to some Staxes....boy I think you are in for a suprise when you try out more dynamic headphones. Because I would consider the DT931 bass to be pretty tight and extended compared to a lot of other dynamic headphones. I think some would consider it to be too controlled. Especially out of a low impedance jack many dynamic headphone enthusiasts would consider its bass to be overly tight. Headroom describes DT931 bass as a bit thin in fact. So with that in mind I really wonder how you will take the bass from Senns or Grados.

I also think you might like Ety's.

(Multiple Stax systems, pornographic pictures of his amp, into Aphex Twin and Panacea, what's not to like?)

Welcome! Looking forward to hearing more from you...

thanks for your reply, setmenu. Although I mostly listen to classical, I find that my senns are a bit restrained in the pizzicatos and the kettle drums. maybe the staxes would have the clarity I'm looking for... hmmm...

My point exactly I do think the 931 is fairly tight but while there
appears to be afair amount of bass its not so hard or solid as
you first think, whilst I admit there are occasions with the stax I
think just a little bit more would be nice I would not trade quality for quantity.

My experience with other phones in the past has been booom.

I think of the staxes as an open reference sound to compare other phones with, and would thus enjoy selecting other pairs to listen to a different flavour emphasis in comparison to my norm.

The bass description of the grados makes me ever more keen for a listen they sound fun.

ETY plugs,I have a pair of stax 001s and are none too keen on
their slightly invasive feel[hence the 931s]but the Etys, I read
somewhere here of some one actualy wretching when installing
them eee..yuck!
+ top of 16 khz....... one of the other slightly nagging things about
the 001 the rolled off top[ I do love em though inspite of their faults] but 16k it will take some convincing, yes I now what you are thinking...... and I am not a bat,...mmmm wish cd went up to
40k like the signatures, now that would be nice..
moth arias.
