The Sony MA900 are superb sounding full-size headphones and they are so comfy with great midrange details, extended highs and deep punchy bass. Denon D600, are also great buy because shows lots of hidden details in midst, highs.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the sony ma900's build quality. In the denon thread I was steered away from the d600 as they have more pronounced bass/lows and more recessed mids/highs compared with other headphones.

In the denon thread I was recommended the Q701 and have been looking at some comparisons with that. Anyone have any comments on these? I've seen some people say they are brighter than the dt's and am wondering if they get too sharp in the upper ranges. They are on amazon new for $230 at the moment so price difference between them and the dt's is pretty negligible.

Ok, I have decided to raise my budget to $500 for both the dac/amp and the headphones. Been taking more of a look at mad dog's due to the recommendations people have been giving as well as the Q701 and the DT880s. I am probably going to pair the headphones with a schiit magni/modi. Anything else to consider?

Thanks for all the help everyone.

If I were you I'd go with DT880 600ohm instead of HE400. Not only it is less expensive but also much more comfortable. Made in Germany, long standing Head-fi staple.
