I am really liking my D7000 for private listening.  What else is as GREAT or better out there?  It seems like most "top of the line" models from makers are Open back design.

Ought to hear the DX 1000. . W1000x is not to shabby either if you want to stick with woodies. Otherwise the Pro 900 is superb value.

Mind you the W1000x isolation is about as non existant as the denons isolation if you also want to minimize outside noise :)

Besides the Denons I have a soft spot for Audio Technica's Art serie, both A500 and A900 are great headphones.
I have always enjoyed my A500s for rock and pop and I still do.

The ATH-A900 looks nice. Does it sound better than the W1000x? Is the W1000x a closed back?

Ehm, no the A900 is way cheaper and I suppose it doesn't sound better than the W1000X...I never heard the W1000X that is.
And yes the W1000X is closed-back... so here's another candiate for your shortlist!

The W1000X is from another league and will leave the A900 behind by a great margin in all area's. I own both headphones. Of course it's better. Everyone could tell, or the huge price difference was not justified.

The W1000X is a closed can but sounds surprisingly as a open can

I just got a pair of w1000x earlier this week and I must say that it sounds amazing. Most beautiful and comfortable headphones I've ever worn too.

There's also the dx1000 and the r10.

I found the W1000x to be a bit lush when I auditioned it at the Head-Fi meet.  Is it because of the gear or is it really lush?

My headphones only have about 40 hours of burn in on them right now, but as of now, it doesn't sound really lush. It's actually a bit thin sometimes.  It was probably the other gear. I heard that tube amps go well with these so maybe that's what you were hearing?

Edit: I agree with cswann here. You should probably describe what you mean by lush. I get the feeling that what you mean by lush is different from what I think it means because I can't really imagine something being lush as a bad thing...

Lush to me is slow, forward and a bit too warm.

Yeah it is slower than most and has forward mids. It's warm in the sense that it has plenty of bass and some reverberation. I wouldn't say the mids and highs would be considered warm though.
