People that don't back up their precious data...
External Hard drives are cheap + Windows NTbackup (Windows XP and before) / Backup and Restore in Vista make it easy to do too. Easily could of been prevented.....
That said, the only sensitive data I have on my comp is the music collection.

Yes, easily prevented when people know that they should make backups. Just like many viruses are easily prevented when people know they should have good antivirus software and keep their virus definitions up to date. And yet hundreds of thousands of computers get infected daily with viruses.

It doesn't help to criticize these users or blame them for their problems since in many cases they have no idea they were at risk. And most PC vendors do not emphazise best practices when they ship their products. To wit: I just took delivery of a new HP notebook and nowhere in the documentation was any mention of backups, security, or antivirus, nor was there any mention of the possible consequences of failure to follow recommended practices in these areas.

It would be nice if users were magically endowed with this knowledge when they take their PC out of the box. But they aren't. And to suggest that they should be just doesn't square with the reality of PC ownership for non-technically oriented people. Perhaps if companies such as HP and Dell were to raise consumer awareness this might be less of a problem.

Where we can be critical of users is in situations where they know the risks of not making backups and choose not to do so. And there are plenty of these folks out there.

my laptops HDD is also damaged...going to get new one tomorrow.

luckily i backed up most of my data on external...but have experienced data loss...very saddening and kinda depresses me.


learn from the experience and backup crucial stuff like me

Only read 2 pages of the thread, but you might want to consider putting it in an external hdd case and try hooking it up to a friends computer. Depending on what is wrong with it, you may be able to access your files that way.

I've never heard of the freezer trick, but I would do a lot of research on it before attempting something like that.

If you want to send it to me I can see what I can do for you and will ship if back if I don't have any luck. I have some tools that may be able to recover the data, but I'm not a specialist in this area.

Reliability in an enterprise environment. RAID allows for little or no downtime when you have a drive failure. These enterprise environments are still doing backups daily if they know what they are doing.

Now in a home environment that is usually not necessary... I usually just keep it simple and do JBOD or RAID 0 if I need the performance and backup often to a separate disc. Raid 10, 0+1 or 1E are also good solutions for a home setup depending on the amount of harddrives you have and how much space/performance you need. You're capped by your motherboards RAID implementation after a point anyways, though I usually just use software RAID through Linux.

Anyone reading this thread, if your hard drive makes clicking noises and you want the data back, TURN IT OFF.
And send it to a clean room. That click is your hard drive being irreparably damaged.
Yeah, and back up.
