My experience with different music players.

I bought a decent external DAC that uses USB or optical and could quickly switch between the two. There were noticeable differences with the most noticeable being the smaller soundstage with USB. With my motherboard the SPDIF only works if I have the builtin soundcard turned on in the bios. As per someones suggestion on this forum I installed a PCIE USB adaptor and DAC has it exclusively. After that, both SPDIF and the external DAC sound much closer to each other. The external DAC is far better of course with more detail and separation.

Thank you for the suggestion. As for initial impressions (haven’t tried any convolution filters yet), I think it sounds similar to ulilith on my system. I remember both wtfplay and xxhighend to be noticeably better but this player has additional features and a nice ui!

Have you tried the linux version of album player, they have a bootable image for rpi which makes it easy to hand on. It has a builtin convolver and this makes it different.

The most issues i had so far haven't been with any player, the most issues i had have been with Bluetooth, especially LDAC

But since the release of pipewire (https://pipewire.org/) i sadly got all Bluetooth (and especially LDAC) issues solved. So i now always have my Walkman connected via LDAC.

As Music Player i am recently testing Elisa https://apps.kde.org/elisa/ which works fine so far

Thank you for the suggestion. I haven’t tried the Linux version yet. I don’t have a sbc like rpi at the moment, but would be eager to give it a try soon.

Fantastic sound quality and simple interface. Works with DSD native which is a blessing. Finally i don't have to waste time/deal with the lousy interface of bug head emperor.

Did you code the audio library from scratch? I wish to explore this area, but not sure of resources to learn from. Would love to know suggestions. Also I wish to explore how to improve Bluetooth audio (it can’t be fully fixed but there are few things that can be done in the SBC encoder side to make things better, like higher precision volume control, etc before encoding. Not sure how much of this is controlled by the Bluetooth audio driver/codec). I do want to implement the player on top of windows kernel streaming, which in supported players have given me the best sound quality so far.

Scratch, no. SounDevil uses a custom audio engine.
Bluetooth, unfamiliar.
Windows kernel streaming, it's rare now because there's a modern alternative: WASAPI Exclusive Mode.
