Where's the Diminishing Returns in DAPs now? I want to get a cheap and very portable mp3 player, but I can't decide how much dollars to put into it, because I don't know their value and returns.

Putting $300 into a portable is not so reasonable now, as I have tons more to buy. But would buying a top end Rio or IPod really hit the sweet spot in returns and SQ? Or would I be better off buying those cheap 128Mb Korean made mp3 players for $70?

The Rio Karma is the best value IMO at $250 online. 20gb, an awesome docking station, and more features than any other (excluding recorders).

Also the Dell DJ 15gb is an excellent value at $200 or less.

you can always buy one of those empty creative muvo2 on ebay.com for about $30-40 and put in your own compact flash card. i've read the sound quality is pretty good.

edit, oh you live in hongkong, well hopefully stuff is even cheaper there, but i dont know.

the 15GB dell djs were going for $152 at the Dell Outlet a couple weeks ago. That sounds like a steal.

Get the creative zen xtra 30gb. It is cheap and it has good sound quality (or so i hear). Plus you can put new harddrives and batteries in it by yourself, no need to send it off to get fixed and be charged wads of cash. I ordered one and it should be on its way.

So how do I choose between:

Creative Zen Xtra (new hdd + battery removal /replacement)
Dell DJ (15G) (not much coverage in head-fi)
Rio Karma (hardware /incompatibility issues?)

Ipod 4G ($299 new)
Ipod 2G Used
Creative Zen Touch ($269 new, 24 hr battery life)

All of these have lower capacity models below US $300 (better at or below $240 though)

How much music do you have, and how much do you need to have at 1 time? For $100, you could get a 256mb flash player that holds around 100 songs.

btw, I'll sell you my old 64mb flash player for $30 bucks. The only problem is that it doesn't come with a usb cable. (I can't find it)
