Just watched "The painist", don't like it particularly. The last movie about classicial musicians that I really like was "Hillary and Jackie". In fact, I couldn't really think of another movie which have left me an impression.

Is there a particular movie in this genre that you like?

I like both of them too, somehow they slipped my mind, it's been so long ago since I watched them.

The Competition is a pretty good movie about some virtuoso pianists who are trying to win a competition. It has a romantic backstory but the piano music is really good. Oh the star of this movie is Richard Dreyfuss.

"Farinelli" is a terrific movie that's on DVD, but in Italian, with English subtitles. It's about the life of the greatest of the castratos. The music and singing are superb.

Amadeus is one of my all time favorite movies. Great flick.

I also like Immortal Beloved and The Red Violin.

This is a little off topic but my favorite musician movie is 'Round Midnight with Dexter Gordon. Very atmospheric. If anybody has an interest in jazz music this is a good movie.

Sorry to hijack your thread.

Miller and Goodman are Jazz/Blues/Swing and not classical, no?

is a classical musician just one that plays classical music? (Benny Goodman would qualify as he played Carnegie

) or one that time considers the best?

I have not seen anyone that can do justice to Mozart. At best, Gerswin comes closest. At least they had Gerswin playing his own music.

btw, Jack Bennie was a great musician.

what he played on his show was just that - a show.

Benny Goodman actually had trouble playing as bad as he did in the movie.

Farinelli reminded me far too much of softcore ****. ^_^

That said, The Red Violin (and especially John Corigliano's score) are worth a look.
