more analytical than 400i

The original HD 800 is known for being insanely analytical, it's under $1000 now too because of the new HD 800 S. You might not like the treble spike at 6k on the original HD 800 though but it can be modded into an HD 800 S to fix that. It's up to you if you wanna open up and mod an almost $1000 headphone or you could get the HD 800 S which goes for around $1400 IIRC.

Also look into the Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro which retails for around $600, it comes with 2 sets of pads where 1 set makes it more balanced and the other set makes it more analytical.

+1 for the original 800. It's probably the most famous analytical headphone under a thousand dollars, and perhaps even higher.

Thx. If the new 660 doesn't fit the bill. It looks like the 800 is a good choice
The new 660 is reportedly designed with the original 650 in mind and isn't really analytical at all. Also you could find a used 800 for the price of a new 660

I doubt the 660’s are going to be analytical at all as the 6 series are not in the least ,good headphones but not analytical. The 700’s and 800’s much more so. The T1’s are also good for that but you have to watch which ones you get as some are ice picks in the ears bright.

I like the idea. Can u find used 800 for $500
You might get lucky and find a pair that cheap don’t know. I paid $680 I’m guessing 6 months ago or so for a minty pair the same ones that @cossix heard as I lent him mine. You are going to need a decent amp to run them though.

Will a Shiite Asgard 2 run them
As gard will run them just fine, it's just a matter of opinion on the sound signature that Schiit amps give. From what I've heard around the site, the mid level amps like Jotunheim and Asgard sound a tad bright, and the tube amps still have one foot in the "solid state" sound side

AKG K812 and HD800 are both very analytical headphones. (Tool-like)
Tesla T1.1/Tesla T1.2/K712 are analytical headphones as well, but not as much.

Asgard 2 can drive them all. It's not a bright amp like the original Magni.
I've always found it to be quite balanced overall with very good treble quality.
Upper midrange was just a little bit glary/shouty on my Asgard 2 but even then it was still a pretty balanced amplifier.
Not the most analytical sounding amplifier.

Thx for all your responces. I was thinking. I hope the phrase "more analytical". Means more detail, more instrument separation and a larger sound stage. This is the up grade im looking for from my hifiman 400i. . Any and all ideas will be researched.

HD800 has the biggest soundstage, that's granted.
K812 is probably the best in terms of instrument separation (sounds tracking for instance)
Tesla T1's soundstage is not as big (vs HD800 or K812) but it somehow fits smaller sounds into a smaller space so the imaging and instrument separation is still excellent.
Tesla T1's sound has more body to it, less of an ethereal presentation.

K712 gets you quite close to these flagships for little money (in comparison).
It's also slightly less clinical, and might let you judge if you enjoy this type of headphone enough to invest in one of the flagships.
