1)I have an MG Head DT, (not OTL) -- do you folks think it's a good idea to upgrade from the MG Head DT to the OTL?

2)If so, where can you get these online? I had a hell of a time finding my Head DT in the first place.

3)Has anyone heard the OTL-32?

4)Where's the best place to get tubes like the Sylvania gold pins, Raytheon 5751's and Valvo 6BQ5's (not ebay..)?

I'm in the US, btw... Any help would be great....

1) Haven't heard DT, I'll let others comment.

2) Divergent is the US distributor of ASL products: http://www.divertech.com/

3) Not me. But yes, there are a couple people here who have heard it, use the search button.

4) The tube site sticky at the top of the Amps section is a great resource for tube sites. I've had the best results with real online dealers, but my favorite tube (Sylvania Gold Pin 5751) came from eBay at a very cheap price. Don't discount eBay auctions, it is a gamble, but if the price is right I wouldn't hesitate to take it.. (and I didn't either, I have too many damned tubes around here now

After I sort through them all I'm gonna sell all the decent ones off that I'm not using).

first of all aryntha, welcome to head-fi, use the search function. (standard greeting around here)

no clue about the other mg-heads though i guess there seems that a lot of them had problems leaving the that joe lau guy so i guess second hand from this forum is as good a place to get mg-heads as anywhere.

as for tubes, there should be a sticky in the amp forum.

so yeah...

Thanks -- well, I have, but the search came up with most information being er, 'prototypical'..

Everyone says over and over, that the OTL32 runs "4x6BQ5, 2x12AU7".. To me, that's 6 tubes. But every single picture shows 7 tubes. What's that 7th tube? Can't find that answer *at all*...

I know I can get the thing from divergent, but I've heard less-than-happiness about that... Also, Upscale Audio (who I got my Head DT from) doesn't sell them due to 'crooked faceplates', hrmm...

The Head DT OTL (non-32) uses a 12AU7 not a 12AX7 in the middle, right? (you guys speak of using a 5751, gain 70... I thought the 12AU7 was gain 20?)

eh, is frustrating, living in an area where there's no distributors/no place to try these out. I may be missing a *world* of improvement from my non-OTL MG Head DT, but it's tough to find out whether or not the best route would be DT OTL MkII or OTL32...

Please verify these numbers before you try any of these in case I made a typo or my information is bad. I don't want to be responsible for a blown amp or a total world conflaguration.

so says timoteus. the differences in the 3 main categories are in gain, highest to lowest. so apparently there are quite a number of substitutes crazy head-fi tweakers have discovered. 5751 i think is 70% of the gain of 12ax7 iirc.

admittedly the search function isn't all that it could be and it does take some practice and reading through a bit of useless garbage to get the good stuff. but it's in there. that and we can be harsh on the new ones.

where are you if i may so inquire? people from this board are from all over the place. so you never know.

oh yeah, and a wild guess here but the 7th tube is the rectifier?

Well, I'm in Colorado... Kind of no-big-deal on the "newbie attack".. May be new here, but have been on plenty of forums in the past.. So it's no big thing...

Just hoping to find some folks who have experienced these new amps first hand... I haven't done enough research in the past before going out and grabbing one, only to find there's something better coming out two weeks later.

Right now, waiting on the OTL32, I think.

best bet is probably to start a new thread in the amplification forum. people who see the thread name that i put up that might be able to help you might skip this thread over. good luck with the search.

The stock 7th tube is a Sovtec 5Y3GT. The OTL32 also functions as a pre-amp, and has a jack for the AKG K-1000, and I think is better suited for low impedances phones than the MG head OTL. You can PM Joe Lau for any more questions on the amp.(OTL32) They can be purchashed at www.upscaleaudio.com or divertech.(mine was cheaper at upscale)I use low and high imp. headphones on the OTL32 and both sound great.
