I know since one is open and one is closed, it is like comparing apples and oranges, but I need to make a decision.
I listen to the whole spectrum but I would prefer something for Metal and Hard Rock though.
I also would like something closed (for late night listening).
I would prefer having an army of specialists then the best headphone overall, that is what makes it so hard.
In case it matters I am getting the UE SuperFi 5vi tomorrow.

I am also open to other suggestions.

Unless you really want a grainy, gritty type of sound for classic rock and metal and that open back sort of soundstage the M50 kills the MS1i is every other way and across all genres IMO.  Really its a unique unrefined type of sound versus a smooth refined one.

Hmm, it is becoming all the more tempting...anything else better in it's price range?

If there is I haven't heard it or of it.  M50s at $100 really do a lot very well.  Especially if you are into a few basic mods and tuning.  Many like the Superlux 668B (balanced).  Probably the only budget bang per buck phone I need to hear left.

M50S not M50, you don't want to deal with a coiled cable, as it generates noise when it hits anything and a straight cable is all around better anyways.

Can't really comment on the MS1 but I just got my M50s a couple days ago and I am loving them. I listen to a lot of rock, classic rock, acoustic, alternative, and a little pop, and imo these headphones sound great with those genres. But make sure you give them AT LEAST several hours of burn in before you start making judgements on them. I didnt really know what to think of them at first but after about 12 or so hours of use im really diggin the sound theyre puttin out. Good luck
