Two ideas I'm considering... stupid ?
 
 
DC-coupled, you'd better have some good offset protection.
 

 
 
With a WCF for twice the current ! Requires a floating PS for the opamp.
 

 
 
Both are missing some protection diodes and the like. Just concepts for now.

That's pretty interesting.
 
Most designs use the glass for voltage gain and the sand for current.
Your doing the sand for voltage and glass for current.
 
Keep going...see where you end up.

Last time I checked, glass was made of sand. Just saying.
