do I need an amp for DT770 + ipad 2?

Are they for portable use? there's different versions of the DT770 being the 32 ohm the easiest model to drive. The Pro 80 (80 ohms) benefits from some extra juice.

Are you looking for a closed back headphone ?
 
if you dont care about sound isolation. you can look into an open back headphone for more natural listening experience.
Fidelio X1 might probably suit you, if you dont mind having an open back option.

The hifimans will need an amp. Something like the c&c bh2 or fiio e11 should work

now that I think about it, a bigger soundstage than the ATH M50 would be great

It really depends on the specific model but closed headphones tend to have more
