I am looking for a musical, engaging headphone that sounds great with poor recordings.  I would like to focus on the music instead of that last bit of transparency that makes old or poor recordings sound awful.

If you know of any models that do that, please let me know.  Thanks

Open or closed headphone?

I think the DT250 (only tried 80ohm) is pretty good for not so great recordings because it isn't very detailed, and it isn't bright.

LFF did a great reviews of som cans from a low-profile company, Fischer Audio. He liked the FA-004, and described it as exactly what you're looking for: a little bassy, smooth, with a "shortcoming" of not being incredibly detailed.

Though I disagree about the lack of detail, I think it's pretty good for a closed headphone.

Well, when you compare it to the K 271/272 (which is closed, and in a similar price range), the 271 is way more detailed.

Koss KSC75. Not just because it's cheap, but also because it's very good and never harsh.

A lot of people are going to disagree with me on this one, but I thought the HD650 was excellent at making not-so-good music sound really good. They sound very engaging, musical and groovy to begin with, and smooth out the sound so well that everything sounds euphonic with them.
