I am currently the (somewhat proud) owner of the Shure SRH440s. While I do enjoy these headphones, I am looking to improve. My set-up is currently far from stellar... I have an old Dimension 3100 with a mediocre soundcard, and I have no money for an amp or anything of the like, and I am looking for a pair of headphones that sound excellent when unamped. My music tastes change quite frequently, but currently I am enjoying a nice phase of drone/doom/sludge metal, as well as hardcore punk. I don't really care for glorious amounts of base, just clarity. My budget is $200, and I live in Canada (Because I intend to buy online).
 
I must apologize, because my knowledge in headphones isn't too great, so you might have to explain things a little bit more than usual.

I suggest buying a USB DAC/amp like the uDAC2 ~$130 or a better sound card like the Prodigy HD2 - see if that does it for you with the SRH440. If not, sell the SRH440 and post again about buying different headphones. You also may want to consider buying used from the for sale forum.

Ok... but if I get this uDAC2, how much will it improve my headphones? And in what ways?
