I got my DT-880 '03 recently and I'm quite satisfied with them. However, on some material and recordings, I think something with a little different presentation would be welcome.

What I'm looking for is a headphone that have a more present midrange and better defined and snappier bass. I'm no bass head and I feel the DT-880 bass has just the right quantity (for me) but I would like more punch and tightness. I can give up soundstage width for more dynamics and PrAT. I listen mostly to classic/alternative rock. My budget could be up to 400$ second hand

Reading the forums I think the following HP could fit the bill

Grados: 325i or Alessandro MS2i or RS-2
Ultrasones: Proline 750 or 2500
Denon D2000

What do you think?

325i would be a good choice IMO. For me my vacation from my '03 880 is my HD 650 but they aren't as quick as Grado, which is what you request.

The Denon could work but I've never heard them...the 2500 is a big gamble if you buy them blind.

Currently I own the RS-1, DT880 (2003, 250 ohm), PROLine 2500, HFI-780, K701, K501, and will shortly order the D5000.

The PROline 2500 is usually either you love it or you hate it. I am one of those who loves it, but many who have listened to mine do not like it. I would think the biggest bang for your buck would be the Grado SR225 or if use the RS-2.

The D5000 specially w/ the MarkL mods is a superbe sounding can, one which I hope to order shortly. But it is over your budget so I would stick w/ an used RS-2 and you will be very happy.

Good luck.

Thanks GreatDane for pointing me that thread but I'm pretty settled for the RS-2 or even the RS-1. After searching and reading many threads about Grados, I must eliminate 325i from the list because I usually listen to music in my bed before sleep. Some says because of 325i's weight (metal cups) they won't stay on my ears very well in the bed.

I also read alot of stuff comparing RS-2 to RS-1, some says RS-2 bass is tighter, some says it's RS-1 . Oh well, let's see what is coming up first on the FS forum or ebay...

Well actually, my grados stay on my head just fine when listening in bed. They sit perfectly on the pillow with no comfort issues.

that goes for my 325i, sr60s and also beyer 770s.

I'd suggest you keep your eyes out for a nice used pair of Grado RS-1.......the older the better. I've had the 325, and RA-2....and sold both. Actually also had dt880/600, and dt990/600. I have kept the dt990/600.

prolines are going to have too much bass for you if you find the dt880 bass quantity adequate.

i think you should try the dt990, preferably the 600ohm version.

Never tried DT-990 but according to many headifiers they have a more pronounced "U" shape frequency response than DT-880 (at least, the 250ohm version). Look at my original post, I'm looking for more midrange presence.

Too bad the Ultrasones have that bass response (and are so controversial), they seem more comfortable than Grados.

Thanks for sharing your opinion
