Alas, too young! First gigs I ever went to were local death metal bands in the early nineties (Altar, Pestilence, Sinister, Thanatos). It was until 1997 that I visited my first metal festival (Dynamo Open air) and saw bands like Cradle of Filth, Entombed, Samael, Testament and Type O Negative.

I've always had really wide taste in music, but I went through a period round about 1984-1990 when it was (mostly) all about extreme metal and hardcore punk. Some people might call that a "phase" but I would point out the records that were released in that period and suggest that I wasn't going through a phase - metal was!

There were so many great records released in those few years.

I have Still Life and Blackwater Park lying here (both legacy edition)

Is there a way to extract the 5.1 tracks and convert them to stereo without cutting away channels? I heard something about it, but Google isn't really helpful.

Yep, it's called DVD Audio Extractor, I just ripped em into a folder in my documents. As I remember there were all kinds of features to play around with.

Just google it. A 30 day trial is free.

I don't think dvd audio extractor downmixes the 5.1 track to two channel so maybe rip it first then downmix in foobar?

Or if you have a cinema amp just choose 2 channel stereo and the cinema amp down mixes the 5.1 to two channel on the fly.

A young but very talented black metal band, Infera Bruo, has just released their debut on bandcamp. Reminds me of <code>, old-school Opeth with their Kvhost-like clean vocals, creeping, sinister vibe and progressive touches in their brand of black metal. For those looking for thoughtful yet true-to-form black metal, I'd suggest a listen!
