Hi!

New to this thread.

What are some good metal recordings that sound natural? Good dynamic range, drums that don’t sound triggered, etc.

While not super metally, I’m thinking a recording like Tool’s Fear Inoculum, any of the 2 Plini albums, etc.

Interested in all forms of metal. Death metal, prog metal, thrash, whatever.

Thanks!

When I think of higher dynamic range and polished production my mind immediately goes to prog metal. Top of mind would bands like Dream Theater, Caligula's Horse, Haken, Leprous, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, etc. Most / all of Opeth's discography (Steven Wilson produced quite a few, then Jens Bogren). Also Steven Wilson's own stuff is quite good - Harmony Codex, The Raven Refused to Sing

Unfortunately, a fair amount of modern (and old school) death metal is mixed quite loud and with a lower DR. I'll dig into some recent stuff to see if I can come up with anything that stands out production-wise.

This has kicked me off of my new music Friday discovery path and I'm now listening to Opeth Ghost Reveries... thanks!

Havok - Conformicide
Horrendous - Anareta
Rimfrost - Expedition Darkness

Great selection already. I'd add

Ne Obliviscaris - Exul
Contrarian - Sage of Shekhinah
Many of the Judas Priest albums, esp on vinyl
Abstract illusion - Woe
Gojira - most of their work
Paradise Lost - Draconian times
Soen - Lotus (and the rest)
