yang,
That is entirely correct. However, my d-555 is with my friend right now...so I can't confirm that. The D-515 bassboost circuit has that nice feel of the D-555. It also borrow the D-555's DSS system. The 2 DSP mode can be adjusted from 1 to 3. A very nice touch when you are using a wimpy amp like my creek OBH-11. D-303 lineout isn't effect by bassboost though... strange.

Maybe it has to do something with digital or old fasioned bass boost. Although the D-555 is old, everything seems digital, so it may have been the first. I know the D-303's bass boost is the old fasioned type, so maybe the D-515 maybe similar to the D-555. Many newer portables ?even the Panasonic 570? have line outs that respond to settings.

Yang,
My D-905 lineout doesn't respond to the setting. My R-50, D-EJ915, 925, EJ01....don't respond either.

The headphone jack on the 3400 was very good, but it was the line out that was so phenomenal. I have yet to hear a better one.

Btw, I finally got the Sanyo CDP-1300, today - and the CDP-4300 should follow, although it's going to be replaced by the CDP-4500/4550 (with/without cable remote control) here at the end of July (info and photo can be already found on www.sanyo.com.au). I don't know whether I'll already be able to perform a proper comparision with the SL-CT570(A) and my old Sanyo CDP-55A this weekend, because there's a huge notebook comparision I've got to do for my job. But maybe I can spare some time to post a few first impressions...

Greetings from Munich!

Down in the catacombs I dug up my old Sony D10 PCDP. I believe this is either the first or the second one Sony ever sold in the US. 1986?

Frankly, age has not treated the old player well even though it never got heavy use. The clear plastic window bezel is taped up to keep it from falling on a CD. I can't keep the door shut, because the plastic is separating from the metal. Who knows if the 1000 mA BP-100 lead-acid battery is any good?

How did it sound? My recollection of it, when last it functioned, is that I heard plenty of distortion in percussive sounds, as the D/A conversion was undoubtedly inferior to that in newer Sony players I sampled. There was no 'skip protection.' The D10 was important for its opening up a market for players yet to come. While it is no longer functional, I can't bear to toss it.

from what I read on this forum and other websites, the D10 was made in 1987(if your unit has a date on it, I would like to hear from you).

I've got a D-515. Got everything but the atrocious headphones that came with it. It has been dropped a few too many times, and has been in storage for a while.

My question is this--does anyone know how much it would cost me to have the unit brought back up to spec? And places that can do the necessary work to accomplish that?

In browsing these forums as well as the Headroom forums, I realize that the last time I really ENJOYED portable listening was with the D-515 (which BTW cost me $450 in 1992). I realized how much I loved the damn thing, and would love to have it in perfect working order again.

Vintage PCDP - Collector's favorite:

Sony:
D-15 (1988)
D-555 (1989)
D-35 (1989)
D-25 (1989)
D-303 (1990)
D-J50 (1991)
D-515 (1992)
D-777 (1995)
D-E905 / 900 (1998)
D-EJ01 / E01 (1999)

Panasonic
SX500
CT570

Philips
AZ6819

Aiwa
XP3
XP6
XP7

All listed above have very good sound quality.

Now I prefer D-515 even to D-303.

Netsurfer,
How about commenting on the sound quality of the D-515 and D-303.

D.J. Bump,
Contact Sony parts and service center. It probably will cost you more than 100 dollars to get the D-515 back to the specification. However, it worths the money. Welcome to the D-515 club.

Hey,
I opened my D-J50 yesterday and discovered that this slim animal has DAC made by BB -model PCM66P.
I knew about D-555 but j50???
I was wonder if someone try DVD-PA65 against D-515 or 555 with normal CD (should we compare DVD-A with CDA?)
Cheers,

I have a 1993 (?) Sony D-828K car model and was really amazed with the line out going to a Grado RA-1 and then to an RS1. I have newer PCDP models from Philips, Sony, etc. that do not even come close to this sound quality. I will compare it with the current Sony top of the line, DEJ1000 to see if it can really hold its own. Need to check out the specs as well in the manual. Can't find anything on it on the web.

Purk,

I can only say that the sounds from these two are very very similiar. Seems that D-515 is a little soft in midrange. Really a good pcdp. And the spindle motor on D-515 is also a little more steady than that on D-303. D-303 suffers skip in reading scratched cds, while D-515 doesn't have such problem.

I paid USD55 or so for this player!!!

Netsurfer,
I agree with you that the midrange on the 515 is a bit softer and not that liquid as the 303's. However, we are talking about neck to neck here. The bassboost on the 303 is also add more punch to the mid-bass, where the 515 adds a very nice kick to the sub-bass only. I still rate this two as the same via the headphone out.
Take my advice, and pair the 515 with a good headphone amp...through your full size phone...and adjust the DSPs mode....your setup is totally rocks!!!

Purk,

Actually I have a ATH-W100. I am seeking a good amp to match it. When plugged directly to the headphone out on D-303, W100 shows over-emphasized bass which I could not stand. It's too punchy and muddy. Right now, I am still using my old MDR-E888. Again I couldn't endure the hot summer with my W100 on my head!!!

D-515 is a perfect pcdp since it has esp (Electronic Shock Protection) except for its weight and eating up of battery. It's sound should be listed in the same class as D-303.
