Large Live Concerts: Where do you position yourself?

I am just wondering...where is the best place to be in a large arena type setting. Obviously for best views you want to be quite close but for best sound I thought near the sound/lighting control desks...if it's good enough for those guys to be in that position then it certainly is for me. In an open space sound dissipates very quickly so position is really crucial I would have thought. Do they even use Stereo at these concerts?

I don't ever seem to find out about shows soon enough to get much choice in the matter. For example, we are going to see Eric Claton in June, we bought the tickets more than 3 months ago, and we still couldn't do better than nosebleed seats!
Same story for Fleetwood Mac a couple of weeks ago, and we bought those tickets several months in advance also.

Dead center, some 10-20 rows in front of the stage.
That way the sound should hit both of your ears about the same time, so no channel imbalance. At the same time close enough to see what happens on the stage, but also enough distance to lower the SPL.
