I am using at the moment a solid state 75watt for them, but I feel with such a wattage I am actually under running my MBL 4004 pre.
Its pot is usually set at 9 o clock.
I would feel more relaxed if I could run my pre at 12 o clock, but then it is very loud.
 
 
 

 
Dimitri, you need lots of power to drive the AKG K1000 well.
I use a RWA Signature 30.2 and would recommend a speaker amp of 30-40 Wpc.

 Depends on how loud you listen to them,I am using a 25 wpc at the present time and never get past 9 o'clock.
 
Any decent speaker amp of around 10 wpc will drive them easily.
 
There are a lot of myths circulating about how hard they are to drive and about how much current they require.

^ I think myths. Plug them in to any speaker amp and you get good, bright and loud sound. "Hard to drive" sounds like they have only tried with headamps.

That sounds about right if we know that impedance of the K1000 doesn't vary across the frequency spectrum. Someone should test it out.

Lots of variables here beyond the ones already mentioned. For example:
 
1. How loud do you listen to music and how much impact do you want.
2. How wide do you open up the K1000.
3. Does  your source output 2 Vrms or some lower/higher level.
 
I listen at very low volumes and find that any receiver/amp in the 10wpc or higher is more than enough, rarely do I go past 9 o'clock with 7 o'clock being zero volume.
 
kiertijai an excellent solution would be a vintage receiver from Marantz, Pioneer, Yamaha, Technics, etc. from the mid 1970's. These can be bought of eBay from under $100 USD and they deliver big time, I am very  happy with my Marantz 2238B and my 2220 (38wpc and 20wpc respectively). Another option if you wish a new amp would be a T-Amp, I have used a HLLY TAMP-20 (about $120 USD in eBay). Good luck.

    I listen music at a normal listening volume e.g. when I use my ZDT with Sennheiser 800, the volume knob is around 9.30 oclock  HE6 needs power at12-1 oclock.
    I would like the K1000 to open up to its potential
    Right now I am using RCA analog output via oppo 83 SE but am planning to have the Perfectwave (waiting for the bridge to work fully) and that
can produce the balanced input.
    I have emailed to Craig Uthus who built the ZDT for me , he said that it is enough depends on your source and your listening.  So it seems that ZDT may be able to drive it without using the speaker phone and should me than enough if I have balanced input.  Right now the ZDT has only unbalanced input but they have balanced output.
    Will the ZDT do that with K1000, my B or C plan is to use the speaker post  or when the perfect wave dac was decide, I should have more power, am I correct?
    Do you know how and where I can get a pair of AKG 1000 and how much will it approximately cost?

My ZDT with the standard transformers has just enough power to drive the K1000, but I wished for another 3-4dB of headroom on loud passages, and a little stronger bass impact.  I think if the ZDT had twice the power it would have been better for louder listening.  According to the table someone posted above, the ZDT would do 500mw at 120 ohm = 101 dB.  My SAC KH1000 amp had the extra power that I wanted.  I sold the K1000, so I can't do any more testing.  If I buy another pair I will make sure it is re-cabled first.
 
The ZDT speaker output with K1000 sounded identical to using the 4-pin XLR jack in the front, and seemed to have the exact same power.  Craig said the 4-pin and speaker-out are connected to the same transformer output.

I would feel safe if I was fiddling around 12 o clock.
With this in mind I try to find something that will let me use that effective region.

 A lot of older intergrated and power amps reached full output with a 300mv line input,this is the reason that using these amps results in very limited volume control.
