Same here, I'm kinda happy with my fx850 (unmodified) but imo not ideal for classical.

Why not?
Well to my ears there is a certain bass predominance and I find mids in some way recessed, so while I find instruments timbre kinda well represented, I feel some lack of separation and air. (I hope I used the proper terminology). The fx850 reminds me my old hd650.

As far as the stock FX850 are concerned, I agree.
However, that's exactly where the mod comes in. The modded FX850 sound not only clearer than the HD650, but to my ears even clearer than the HD600.

I used to like my old hd650, but I'm not sure I'd like it as much now. The fx1100 seems to be even smoother, so probably not the right idea. Too bad, they are very nice

Well, fx850 are surprisingly well built and they offer a lot for the price (In north america at least), and if there is any chance that the fx1100 is any better, I would look at it, as soon as the price drops a little: at the moment where I live they cost almost 300$ more. I want to try the j444 someday but I'm kinda clumsy so...

I'm really not sure that the difference between the two is worth the price of admission. That being said the FX1100 is better. I found it better both before and after mod (it's the same phone, after all), but I know stock, James prefers the FX850 to the FX1100. So if you're not gonna mod it, then it's a bit more of a mixed bag.
FWIW I'm definitely gonna mod it.

Trance recently said he prefers the 750 over the 1100 [So far], so you're good to go.
