JVC HAR-X700 and 900. Two of the best dynamics? Am I nuts?

Portable amp for pc. What do you prefer e5 or hotaudio thunderbolt/ice model. Have a xfi titanium with front bay.

Also I read that the front bay does not put out full power? What ia the deal on that?

I ordered rx900 will see how that goes.

X-Fi front bay is horrid. Best to go from the back with a decent little amp. I use an old Xp atm. It rules for most any low impedance can.

I shall do, I am a COMPLETE noob when it comes to amps, apart from fiio E5 kindly suggested by Rex i have no idea of any other brands or types. Ah well, this amp must be good, so I shall go and buy one pronto, well in a couple of days anyway if anyone wants to dispute this recommendation. But, since there are other threads devoted to amps I shall not tally here any longer, fair ado and have a good day all!

Just read through the thread and I had a few questions:

Do both of these headphones leak at all? In a dorm with Grados, Stax and Senns, my roommate complains when hes trying to study (pretty understandably), so Im looking for something that will isolate decently.

Owners of both: as these wont be my primary headphones, is it worth doubling the price of the 700s to got to the 900s? I listen primarily to folk branched music, so I think the 900s would suit me better, but I am a poor college student.

Is the comfort of the 900 pads better then the 700s?

They do isolate quite well, actually. They're not great right out of the box. They're more closed than open, but other phones I've tried like the DT770 and HD280 isolate better. But if you have five minutes you can open them up and stuff the housings with stuffed animal stuffing and this helps tighten up the bass (which is a nice improvement) and helps them further with isolation. After that, you'll have no complaints with the amount of sound getting in or leaking out.

I actually prefer the 700 to the 900. The 900 is still burning in and getting better, but I don't think it will ever be twice as good as the 700. Even for your music tastes. Just my opinion though. The 700 is forward like a Grado but with more fullness, while the 900 is a little slower, more laid back. But it also seems to be bloated and veiled more so than the 700. Again, it could just be that it needs more time to burn in. And as I'm sure you read from this thread, mods like pulling out the diffuser and felt, stuffing the housing, and dynamat seem to help greatly. So it just depends on if you want to spend twice as much and do some DIY.

I can almost guarantee you'll be happy with the 700s if you let them burn in for about 4 days. Especially for the price.

However, the 700s pads are its weak point. Its a $200+ headphone with $33 pads. They're cheap, brittle pleather wannabe pads. They're comfortable enough, but I don't think they'll hold up over time. The 900 pads are awesome. Very nice smooth leather. The 900 is a $200+ headphone with $200+ pads. So if comfort and quality is a big issue, than maybe the 900 would be worth it. I suppose I'd pay the $20 difference between the two just for the pads. I just put the 900 pads on the 700, so I have the best of both worlds.

looking at the 2, 20 $ for pads doesn't seem too unreasonable. I had a pair of triports (dont worry, from before headfi) that I could slap on if i needed to, but they fell in half. I could always have them sent back, but i really dont want to (warranty is also probably up anyway). These sound like they would be nice study headphones, as my others tend to be distracting (in a good way).

This seems like a moot point as they have been compared to more expensive phones, but I was thinking about picking up some portapros (about the same price). Would it be fair to say the JVCs leave them in the dust?

Ok, I finished the full TopPop mods to the RX900 last night (full Dynamat (Extreme), stuffing the housings, removing the felt and the diffuser), and have been listening and comparing them to the RX700 all morning. I also burned them in all this week, so I now have over 100 hours on them.

I gotta say, I was hoping for more. The bass is more controlled and bleeds less into the mids, but overall, these mods didn't do what I was hoping. I was hoping they would help overtake the RX700. They did not. I still prefer the forward presentation and clarity of the 700. The 900 (although better now) sounds bloated, stuffy and echoey in comparison. Don't get me wrong, its sounds way more expensive than it is, but RX700 just sounds better.

I thought the muddiness and echo sound would be eliminated by the dynamat, and I dynamtted the entire back of the cup and surrounding the driver plus the driver itself, but it wasn't. I think its just the nature of this phone. The bass quality and quantity are now the same on both phones, which is plenty let me tell you, but not too much, at least for me. Some people may not want this much bass.

At this point, I still like the RX900, especially for its price. But it's not as crisp and clear as the RX700. It does have slightly more fullness and presence, which is nice. I actually wish I had a phone that has the forwardness and clarity of the 700 and the fullness of the 900. But to me, the bloated tones of the 900 distract me when I know I could be listening to the 700 instead.

So the 700 is still the winner in my book. Best $30 ever spent!

Oh, no. They're done. Only about 100 hours or so.

Yep, mine have over 100 hours on them. Like I said, they're not bad, and I probably wouldn't even notice their shortcomings if I didn't have the 700 right next to it going back and forth.

The mods helped, and thanks a lot TopPop for a great mod tutorial. I just love the RX700 sound too much, I guess.

Have you heard the RX700, TopPop? If not, I suggest you get onboard! You may find you prefer the RX700 too.

I've been really thinking about it, actually. I wonder how the mods would do with them??
