Forgive me if i'm going slightly ot here.

About balanced cables, must the whole rig be balanced, ie, balanced dac feeding balanced amp feeding balanced cable to the JH13. Or can it be something like iPhone 3GS to balanced cable to Jh13.

Your amp must be balanced. Your source can be SE or balanced.

Oh, thanks alot guys. Balanced is ruled out for me then, since I need it primarily for portable use and I'm not likely to get a balanced amp.

I can ask this question in a separate thread if need be (should be simple to answer), but I'm curious...how does a balanced amp and cable improve the sound quality? Being balanced is generally only an improvement vs. SE for very long runs in home theater, I'm wondering how its different for headphones.

Interesting...seems to be mixed opinions on what exactly balanced offers. There were quite a few people who claimed the JH13 sounded better balanced...perhaps it was simply due to the amp used having better balanced connection vs. SE?

I heard the JH13 balanced at RMAF. It was run out of an RSA apache fed by a 10,000 Electrocompaniet DVD player. It was a fantastic rig, without a doubt. There are some inherent technical benefits to bridged balanced amps, i.e. "true balanced". Whether those translate to sonic benefits is debated here. Suffice it to say, I'll be balancing mine.

Yes, but I believe you can bridge an unbalanced amp, as well.
