Yesterday @SFJAZZ, we had front-row seats for a superb, intense two set show by Jack DeJohnette (drums and piano), Ravi Coltrane (saxophones), and Matthew Garrison (electric bass and diverse digital gear). Matthew is the son of John Coltrane's famous bassist Jimmy Garrison, Ravi is of course John Coltrane's son, and Jack DeJohnette started his storied drums career with Charles Lloyd, Bill Evans, and Miles Davis. He's also Matthew's godfather, and according to them, Matthew and Ravi met first at his house. A lot of dense jazz history here, which makes it even more special when they take a totally fresh look at a deep John Coltrane classic such as "Wise One," which they play in the video below. They also recorded the very good "In Movement" album for ECM, released last year.
