I just started my research into vintage AKGs and i ran across this. Those six circles are the identifying mark of the Sextett, right? I've never seen one with the screen off. Also, the headphone in this picture was not identified as a Sextett, so I'm a little confused.

Yes, it appears to be a lp sextett. Not really sure because the flash reflecting off the headphones is so bright. Are the badges silver? That's another sure way to tell.

The badges, ring, and headband lettering are all gold.

I wish comprehensive K240 information wasn't so hard to find :frowning2:

EDIT: additional pictures.

Oh, I'm sorry. They are not sextetts. The first pic was a little hard to tell because of the flash. But now it's pretty obvious what they are. They are infact monitors. They don't sound quite as good as sextetts, but they do sound better than the current k240s. Some actually like them as much as sextetts. They are vintage and are 600 ohms. So if you get them, make sure you feed them plenty of power.

Do the Monitors have the passive radiators though?

Comprehensive K240 information isn't that hard to find.  Here's 35 pages worth...

The monitors have vents rather than radiators, which was a method developed because AKG realized they worked similarly while drastically reducing manufacturing costs because they are just fabric vents instead of 6 additional diaphragms plus vents.

Here's a nice little history of the K240, though keep in mind that it's written by AKG, so it is more positive about the newer designs than most head-fiers find to be true.  They do mention that the newer designs saved costs, but they fail to mention that they also had inferior sound and performance.  But I know at least one head-fier who prefers the M version to the Sextett.

One of the things I'm unclear on as far as the Sextetts go is this:

"K240"
"Cardan"
"Sextett"

All of the early ones I've seen are marked as K240's.  Some are marked Cardan.  And some are marked Sextett (in addition to, or instead of Cardan).  This is on the box.  As far as I know, the silver badge on the one earcup are all the same with the 600 ohm.  I'm just curious about the "Cardan" and "Sextett" parts.

Also, and this is my personal preference, but I prefer the current K240S (Mk II) to the K240M.  I don't think the M's have enough bass.  I feel the same way about the DF's.  But I love the Sextetts (I have one MP pair that is just plain "magical").  The one thing with the K240S is that it takes a good 15 to 20 hrs of burn in to settle the low end down and "activate" the highs so they sound proper.  Out of the box, they sound too muflled, dull, and woofy.
