is there a 'better' player than WMP11 i should at least try?

I use winamp with asio + upsampling at 96khz in ultra mode.
Sounds good.

Foobar2000 if you're willing to spend some time and learn. Winamp if you still want a fully functional player that doesn't require as large a time investment.

Foobar2000 for audio.

Media Player Classic for video.

VLC hates subtitles. D=
