Is the LCD-2 worth the $1k price?

Does your HD650 sound different from your HE-400?

I really don't understand your question. What does "worth" and "better off" mean to you? The LCD-2 is a great headphone. I don't know whether *you* will think it is a great headphone or "worth" $1000.

Wearing speakers in public will make you look daft.

You can't compare the relative qualities of headphones and speakers. Only you could decide what is preferable. As a rule of thumb though the law of diminishing returns is alive & well in the world of headphones.

I haven't heard them but I've read that yes, they do improve on the HD 650 pretty much across the board but you'd be better either waiting for an owner to jump in or ask in a dedicated thread. It's three times the price so I'd imagine it will sound different.

mmm not worth it at $1000. i heard that the dealer gets these for abt $600.... so god knows how much audeze makes for each pair of headphones. ...tho to be fair most headphones have pretty insane markups

It won't take too long a wait shopping on line to get the LCD-2 for under $1,000.  Stay tuned to the Deals Discussion thread on this forum.

The LCD-2 is accurately called "The Prince of Darkness".  If you like that sound signature it might be worth it for you.  The HD 650 has better mids than the LCD-2.  This is a good place to start comparing their relative sound signatures:

The LCD2.2 Fazor has much better mids and highs then the original LCD2 and keeps 90% of the bass. Now I got a B-stock for $700 and LOVE them and would do it again in a heart beat for that price maybe even a bit more....:money_with_wings:

P.S. I had the HE-400 but not the HD650 (have had a chance to sit with them but only about 30 mins) IMO sell the HE400 and put that to the LCD2.

I still think the OP's question is meaningless. It simply can't be answered. There are people that will pay $1000 just to see if the latest revision of the LCD-2 is really any different than the previous version they already own. There are other people that would never pay more than $100 for a pair of headphones. Those two people have vastly different ideas of "worth". No one can tell you whether an upgrade is "worth it" - that's a personal choice!
